Gorgeous dobbies from the finest craftsmanship
Originally a kimono weaver with a focus on dobby, founded in 1923. Shimojima’s main sales now come from women’s fabrics but the focus on dobby endures. The 5th generation owner, Shimojima Teruki, says the company takes advantage of the kimono’s legacy to create today’s fashion. Shimojima’s “filament weave” (applying extra-thin yarns) or three-dimensional “nashi-ji weave” threw an unexpected light on dobby’s intrinsic elegance. Dobbies generally look plainer than jacquards, but Shimojima’s are extraordinary – gorgeous and elaborate with complex processes such as fil-coupé, opal printing, fabric dyeing, and multi-layered weave. The company is also able to produce a broader width (100cm or more) fabric with different patterns and designs. Needless to say, its fabrics are highly prized by many apparel brands.
